A Sports Update from Athletic Director Bob Leake

The fall season is well underway and the Bishops have been hard at work representing the school across the Commonwealth. Following early camp, the teams jumped right into their respective competitions. Here’s a quick recap:

  • The football team currently sits at 1-2, with a great win over Covenant and loses to North Cross and Nansemond Suffolk Academy.
  • Boys soccer traveled to Christchurch to participate in their early season tournament, falling to St. Christopher’s and defeating Fredericksburg Christian. The soccer team also hosted the annual Seven Hills Soccer Classic on our VES campus this past weekend. The team finished 3rd out of the eight teams participating. Doug Hogan and Ghaven Williams were named to the all-tournament team. The soccer team will add to its 4-3-1 in Tuesday’s game against Covenant.
  • Cross Country is off to an amazing start. Led by Coach Jen Anderson, the Bishop girls are undefeated, knocking off Fuqua in a dual meet and dispatching five other schools in their meet at Westover Christian. The boys team defeated Fuqua at the dual meet and finished 2nd out of six schools at Westover.
  • Volleyball, led by first year coach Summer Jones, competed in the Temple Christian tournament early in the season and finished 2nd overall. With a difficult schedule at the start of the year, the girls are starting to find their rhythm and are putting together some quality matches. They currently have a 2-7 record.
  • Field hockey just returned from their overnight trip where they were victorious against division competitors, Nansemond Suffolk Academy and Christchurch, to improve to 3-2 on the season.
  • The girls varsity tennis has moved from the spring to the fall season and have made quite an impact in the early season. They are led by senior Rachel Naumann, who is currently 3-1 on the season.

There is plenty of action on the VES campus in the coming weeks highlighted by our Homecoming football game on October 3 against Atlantic Shores at 3 p.m. At halftime of the game we will honor our boys and girls 2015 lacrosse teams, both of which made deep runs into the state tournament. We hope to see you at the game!Meet the Coach: Summer Jones

Summer is in her first year at VES. She serves as head girl’s volleyball coach in the fall and will serve as the girls JV basketball coach in the winter. In addition, she also holds the role of assistant athletic director at the school. Summer is a graduate of Longwood College where she is now finishing her master’s degree. Summer is responsible for keeping our athletics information on the VES website current, compiling the eligibility lists for our athletes, confirming upcoming games with our opponents, and overseeing the academic eligibility of our student athletes. A Lynchburg native, Summer graduated from Brookville High School and has coached at a variety of different levels in the Lynchburg area.

Athletes of the Week

Boys – George Battle

George, a senior running back from Charleston, West Virginia, currently leads the Bishops with 379 rushing yards from scrimmage and is averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He has scored six touchdowns for and currently ranks third among the area high school football players in rushing yards and touchdowns. In addition to his leadership in athletics, George serves as a member of the counselor body at VES.

Girls – Kate O’Brien

Kate, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, leads the girl’s varsity cross country team. In their two meets so far this season, Kate finished first at Fuqua in a dual meet and captured second place overall in a six team meet at Westover Christian leading her team to first place finishes in both meets. While small in stature, her drive, determination, and skill as a runner have led to some fantastic early season results.

Once again I want to thank all of you have been to a contest either here at VES or at an away game. The support of our families has been tremendous and, if the support our fans have brought to the fall season teams continues, it is going to be a great time to be a Bishop. Please follow all of our teams on the VES website and look for the links to the live webcasts when they are available.
