Graduation Requirements

The academic year is divided into semesters, with 1/2 credit offered per semester course and 1 credit for full-year courses. Each student must earn 18 credit hours to graduate. All VES students must carry a course load of at least five classes per term, but most of our students take six. Students must choose at least four core classes each year, and they may also choose from a variety of electives each term.

Minimum Graduation Requirements

4 credits: English 9, English 10, English 11 (including Major American Writers), and English 12 (including Major British Writers, unless substituting with AP Literature)

3 credits: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry

2 credits: US History, European History

3 credits: Biology, Chemistry or Physics, and another class of choice

Foreign Language

2 credits: completion of at least the second level of one language

1 credit: a total of three term classes in art (one year of glee club equals two thirds of this requirement)

1/2 credit: 1 semester of a religion course

Community Service

In addition to the academic requirements, all students are required to complete 30 hours of community service each year of attendance in order to graduate.

New Graduation Requirements

4 credits: Must include English 9, English 10, English 11 (including Major American Writers unless enrolled in AP Composition), and English 12 (including Major British Writers, unless enrolled in AP Literature). Students must be enrolled in an English class at all times.

½ credit: Students must complete one semester of a religion course.

½ credit: In addition to completing the fine arts and religion requirements, students must complete one other elective class of their choosing.

Required Course Load: A full academic load is defined as six courses, which every student is required to carry
